What is it about?
istorically, checking the health or activity of specific brain cells required expensive scans or dangerous, invasive surgeries, but a 2026 breakthrough by Lee and Romac in the journal Neuron changes that by reading brain activity through a simple blood test. The researchers achieved this by engineering synthetic "messenger" proteins called RMAs. When introduced into targeted neurons, those brain cells start producing the RMAs and releasing them into their surroundings. Amazingly, these tiny messengers are specially designed to slip safely through the brain's natural defense wall—the blood-brain barrier—and float directly into the bloodstream. Instead of trying to peek inside the skull, scientists can just draw a little bit of blood to detect these markers, revealing exactly how those specific brain cells are behaving. Because it only requires a routine blood draw, doctors can track this activity continuously over several months, giving them a running "movie" of brain health rather than a single, static snapshot. By proving this highly sensitive technology works seamlessly in primates, the team has opened the door to a future where monitoring complex neurological diseases or testing new brain therapies could be as easy as your annual physical.
