What is it about?

This paper surveys the scientific literature investigating how estrogen and stress hormones have different effects on brain tissue and cognition. We propose that the dramatic decrease in estrogen experienced during menopause may make women more vulnerable to the negative effects of stress hormones on the brain and cognition. However, maintaining estrogen levels after menopause may combat those effects in women without contraindications for estrogen treatment.
