What is it about?
Electromechanical resonators are usually tuned at fabrication and fixed thereafter. We demonstrated impact-activated programming of electromechanical resonators by combining a ferroelectret nanogenerator (FENG) with vibration energy harvesting. An impact triggers the FENG to adjust the resonator's electromechanical behavior, effectively programming the system's response through physical events rather than rewiring. This opens adaptive vibration-management devices that reconfigure themselves in response to their mechanical environment.

Why is it important?
Adaptive resonators that respond to impacts could let machines and structures tune their own vibration behavior — valuable for monitoring, harvesting, and protection in environments where manual reconfiguration is impossible.
Perspectives
The idea that an impact could be an instruction — that hitting a device could program it — reframed how we thought about mechanical inputs. The FENG made that metaphor literal.
