What is it about?

Dimethylsulphoxide is an effective solvent to observe fluorescence changes of acidic hydrogen containing fluorophores while detecting fluoride ions . In this study we showed that a solvated fluorophore when dissolved in Dimethylsulphoxide can also act at a similar capacity as that of unsolvated urea based fluorescent sensors. While understanding such phenomenon we demonstrated several other features: (a) Dimethylsulphoxide solvate of N,N′-dinaphthylthiourea posses syn-anti conformation. (b) Among various anions and cations tested, addition of fluoride ions enhances fluorescence emission of a solution of N, N′-dinaphthylthiourea whereas copper (II) ions quenches.
