What is it about?

1. Brain uses GLUT 1 and 3 membrane transport to get Glucose in to neurones 2. Functional or structural deficits can lead to brain cell deficits in energy production 3. Frontal lobes are particularly sensitive to Glucose uptake 4. Hypofrontality is a key feature of schizophrenia

Why is it important?

1. The Dopamine hypothesis is increasingly considered to be a phenomena secondary to hypofrontality 2. Raises the prospect of using ketones to provide brain nutrition in schizophrenia

Perspectives

Emma (the first author) was one of my medical students; introduced me to the complexities of GLUT transporters and its relevance to brain energetics.
