What is it about?
The uniaxial ratcheting of the polycarbonate (PC) with different molecular weights was experimentally observed at room temperature. The effects of mean stress, stress amplitude, stress rate and peak hold-time on the ratcheting were observed. Great mean stress and stress amplitude dependences of ratcheting were confirmed and significant time dependence was also observed.

Why is it important?
The structure components made by the PC polymers are often subjected to a cyclic loading, and fatigue failure is a main failure mode of such components. The results obtained in this work helped to understand the mechanical properties of PC under multiaxial cyclic loadings and then provided a guidance for rational application of PC products
