What is it about?

Polymers are submitted to electron beam radiation for several reasons (for example, to sterilize food packages or surgical appliances), but this radiation alters the properties of the material. These alterations are characterized in the present work.

Why is it important?

The changes in physical properties change the way the material behaves in service and, sometimes, the material may fail in service because the properties are not the same as specified in the project. In the present work we went beyond the typical doses used in the industry and did irradiation at room temperature, allowing to observe a new phenomenon (irradiation-induced recrystallization).

Perspectives

It s a pleasure for a thesis supervisor to observe his student shining. This work is a huge achievement of my former student Dr Alessandra Fernandes Santos, who developed the experimental schedule mostly on her own. The work is going on in a second thesis project, this time by Mr. Eduardo Maeda. The collaboration with Dr Leonardo Andrade e Silva was also a highlight of this work.
