What is it about?
Olmsted syndrome is a rare skin disease that causes thickening of the skin in the fingers, toes, mouth and peripheral body parts and causes various symptoms such as itching. The cause of this disease is linked to changes in the gene for a heat-activated protein called TRPV3. In this work, we show that changes in the temperature of the minute compartments of the skin cells is a feature of this disease.

Why is it important?
This work demonstrates that even tiny compartments within cells can be disrupted, culminating in bodily dysfunction. More in-depth studies can help identify cures for diseases that affect the internal environment of cells.
Perspectives
It is an intricate study into the environment within the cells and shows that tiny changes in the intracellular environment can manifest into disorders on the external organs.
