What is it about?

An analytically advanced piece of research, trying to look at different aspects of a relationship between a leader and a follower (affect, loyalty, contribution and professional respect), from both leader and follower perspectives simultaneously. The aim was to see if any of the aspects and perspectives were related to leaders and followers creative performance. Since the setting was research groups, creative performance was measured as publications.

Why is it important?

The theory on which the piece is based (leader-member exchange theory – abbreviated LMX) is an inconsistently measured and misanalyzed theory that merits investigations that examine if relationships one-to-one are crucial, as the theory suggests, or if overall "good" leader-follower relationships within a group is more important for positive outcomes.

Perspectives

The work has perhaps more implications for LMX theory than for practitionners in the domain in which it was conducted. It appeared it is important to be a part of a research group were leader-follower relationships in general are good, contrary to theoretical predictions which suggest that general quality of relations should be of subordinate importance to one-to-one relationship's quality. The conclusions for the different aspects of the leader-follower relationship were not particularly conclusive.
