Extreme temperatures pose several limitations to electric vehicle (EV) performance and charging. A new improved Li-ion battery model is presented here.

Why is it important?

We combine an empirical artificial neural network Li-ion battery model with a lumped capacitance EV thermal model to study how temperature will affect the performance of an EV fleet. Battery thermal management clearly improves charging at low temperatures

Perspectives

Accounting for temperature effects is essential for correctly understanding Li-ion battery performance. Temperature affects internal resistance and losses. The new model presented is more accurate than previous ones and helps to optimise electric vehicle thermal management.
