This Review article highlights the basic mechanism of photoelectrochemical biosensors and reviews the recent reports on the nature of electrode materials and the signal amplification strategies to enhance the biosensing performance.

Why is it important?

PEC process is a promising biosensing technology. It is attracting due to their higher sensitivity, selectivity and lower limits of detection. It uses the solar light as the excitation source! The photocurrent based detection makes it a cheaper technology which is very attractive in commercial view point.

Perspectives

The PEC process is attracting various applications and bioanalysis is a new dimension in its own way! With the excellent biosensing performance, the PEC bioanalysis needs more attention to develop next generation electronic point of care devices that can operate with simple solar light irradiation.
