What is it about?

In this paper, we provide evidence that a7-nAChRs are present on GABAergic interneurons in the basolateral amygdala and that their overall function is to reduce excitability within the amygdala.

Why is it important?

This paper is important because it provide evidence as to why there is a transient reduction in anxiety after cigarette smoking, namely that activation of a7-nAChRs in the BLA lead to enhanced inhibitory activity. Moreover, this provides another mechanism as to how GABAergic inhibition is modulated in the BLA.
