What is it about?
This study has been contributed to the literature as the first and only study demonstrating the efficacy of Nigella sativa oil (black seed oil) in a pediatric population diagnosed with upper respiratory tract infection.

Why is it important?
This study showed that severity score, prevalence of antibiotic use and visits with upper respiratory tract infection decreased with oral Nigella sativa oil use. This study supports the existing evidence that natural products are promising alternative treatments with their safety and versatility and hopefully may promote further research on appropriate dosage, safety and efficacy of these drugs for evidence based and safe complementary treatments.
Perspectives
This study provides the first clinical evidence supporting the efficacy of Nigella sativa oil in a pediatric URTI population, filling a critical gap in the phytotherapeutics literature. The observed reductions in symptom severity, infection frequency, and antibiotic use carry meaningful implications for both clinical practice and public health. Given the global burden of antimicrobial resistance, identifying safe, accessible, and effective adjunctive therapies for pediatric respiratory infections is an urgent priority. Nigella sativa oil, with its well-documented immunomodulatory, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and antitussive properties, represents a promising candidate for integration into evidence-based integrative pediatric care. From a public health perspective, its affordability and widespread availability make it particularly relevant for low- and middle-income settings where antibiotic overprescription remains a persistent challenge. These findings lay a solid foundation for future randomized controlled trials examining dose-response relationships across age groups, long-term safety profiles, and potential synergistic effects with standard therapies. Ultimately, this work strengthens the evidence base for the role of traditional and complementary medicine in the management of pediatric infectious diseases and invites broader interdisciplinary dialogue between conventional and integrative medicine practitioners.
