What is it about?

This article details the construction of discipline-specific wordlists for eight core subjects at the secondary school level. The wordlists are publicly available to be used by teachers and academics. A number of highly innovative features that extend the usefulness of such wordlists are present.

Why is it important?

The differences in the way language is used in different disciplines is well recognised. Previous work has solely focused on either the tertiary level or texts language learners. However, the discipline-specific nature of texts is of course just as relevant at the secondary level. This is the first study of the disciplinarity of high school textbooks.

Perspectives

I was stunned to see that no one had previously attempted to create relevant discipline-specific wordlists for the secondary level and was motivated to create a useful resource for teachers.
