What is it about?
This is a validation study for a non-invasive cardiac output monitor (NICOM) called the Aesculon in pediatric cardiac surgery patients. This device utilizes bioimpedance/bioreactance technology. We compared the non-invasive cardiac output numeric from the NICOM with a cardiac output derived from the Fick equation, where we actually measured oxygen consumption. The correlation was strong.

Why is it important?
This demonstrates clinicians can use a NICOM like this in the cardiac operating room and Cardiac ICU to measure cardiac output and cardiac index.
Perspectives
The non-invasive cardiac output monitor studied in this manuscript is a another tool for physicians to use on critically ill children.
