What is it about?
This paper presents for the first time a detailed and exhaustive evaluation of the carbon footprint of ICT, and projects its relative contribution through 2040. We find that if it's business as usual, the ICT contribution will reach 14% of the global footprint, or about 1/2 of the total transportation sector.

Why is it important?
Unless we take immediate measures to curb the ICT footprint by moving data centers to 100% renewable, and reduce the wasteful impact of cell phones, we are unlikely to achieve the carbon reduction targets that are required to avoid catastrophic global warming consequences.
