Why is it important?

The key for renewable power integration is to view the energy system as a whole. Combining the thermal and electric system enables to "oversize" renewable power and thus cover much of the power demand during poor weather conditions whereas at peak conditions surplus RE power can easily be converted to thermal energy through an electricity-to-thermal conversion strategy . E.g. in Helsinki wind power could in this way meet 60% of the yearly electricity demand.
