What is it about?

Microsphere-based controlled release technologies have been utilized for the long-term delivery of proteins, peptides and antibiotics, although their synthesis poses substantial challenges owing to formulation complexities, lack of scalability, and cost. The manufacture of spherical poly(lactic-co-glycolic) acid (PLGA) microspheres is reported. Size, shape and porosity of the microspheres can be controlled by varying the electrospray processing parameters. The influence of particle size and porosity on the release kinetics is demonstrated.
