What is it about?

Here we present new experimental results in system Ni - Nb - Si, which we have been studying for some years already. We increased the temperature of the isotherm to 1323K based on previous results, which showed that 800oC (1073K) was insufficient to attain equilibrium in this system. Even so we faced problems in the Nb rich part, which made us perform some experiments at an even higher temperature (1473K), and for our surprise, we discovered three new compounds in this system. There is much more to come here.

Why is it important?

Phase diagrams are fundamental to understand the relation between microstructure and properties in materials and the correct experimental description is valuable not only for direct use, but also for the construction of thermodynamic databases, which allow to extend the results beyond the investigated system.

Perspectives

This is a major contribution by Dr. Vinicius Oliveira dos Santos, produced in his PhD thesis at the Escola Politecnica. This also an example of the continuing collaboration with Universitat Wien and with the Escola de Engenharia de Lorena.
