What is it about?

Compound management labs utilize liquid handling automation which greatly increase throughput, however there are a number of artifacts that can be introduced as well. Unless compound management teams are vigilant with regards to their quality control checks, these artifacts can go unnoticed and impact the quality of downstream high throughput screening data. By automating these QC checks with a novel machine vision instrument, we demonstrate that an automated QC platform is an effective replacement for manual visual inspection and is also capable of much greater throughput.

Why is it important?

Compound management liquid handling artifacts include empty wells that should be filled or vice-versa, partially filled wells, compounds which have precipitated out of solution and compounds containing color. Undetected, these artifacts can have a negative impact on the quality of data generated by downstream processes. By developing an automated machine vision instrument which is capable of detecting these artifacts, compound managers can be alerted to errors in real-time, allowing any issues to be addressed immediately.
