What is it about?

This is mainly a petrographic investigation of the progressive alteration of minerals and their textures in an intrusive ultramafic body in eastern Burundi. Four main types of alteration are described, involving alteration of olivine and orthopyroxene to serpentine, and locally, adjacent to late faults, to a talc-chlorite-carbonate assemblage. Chromite is largely unaffected except by this localized, late talc-carbonate alteration.

Why is it important?

The mafic-ultramafic bodies are part of the Kibaran tectonothermal intrusive event, within the Karagwe-Ankole belt, for which detailed metamorphic studies are lacking or unpublished. This study represents a commencement of such investigations, which will shed light on the relative timing and intensity of several deformation/metamorphic events within the belt.

Perspectives

It was important to demonstrate the effects of metamorphism and more localized alteration on chromites, before using these as indicators of petrological evolution, or as a geochemical prospecting tool.
