What is it about?

In this study, childhood asthma status was shown to impact the effect of exposure to maternal distress on stress response, measured by cortisol levels. Children with asthma exposed to early life maternal distress had lower cortisol levels than their healthy counterparts.

Why is it important?

Our findings demonstrate that socio-environmental factors, such as exposure to recurrent maternal distress, affect stress response development in children, and that asthma status may moderate this effect.
