What is it about?

Sick sinus syndrome is a common indication for pacemaker implantation, characterized by an inadequate function of the sinus node--the natural heart pacemaker. In this paper, we provide estimates of the incidence of sick sinus syndrome in the general population. We also identify risk factors associated with developing sick sinus syndrome. We found that older individuals and those with risk factors for cardiovascular disease were more likely to develop sick sinus syndrome.

Why is it important?

This is the first study to estimate the incidence of sick sinus syndrome in the general population. Also, for the first time, we identify risk factors for sick sinus syndrome. Finally, we calculated the current and future number of people diagnosed with sick sinus syndrome in the USA. This information is useful to understand the mechanisms causing sick sinus syndrome and to determine the future impact of this condition.
