This changes how we think about the daily lives of freshwater predators. Even a common fish in a reservoir may use stable places and repeatable routes, rather than simply moving randomly through the water.

This study changes the way I think about the daily life of freshwater fish. A reservoir may look like a dark and featureless environment to us, but for a pikeperch it can be a familiar landscape. The fish we tracked repeatedly used the same daytime resting place, left it during the night, and returned before dawn. These returns were not just random movements back into the same general area — they were efficient movements towards a specific site. To me, the most fascinating aspect is that this behaviour looks like a daily spatial routine. The fish seemed to know where its resting place was, to remember it, and to return to it after nocturnal excursions. Our study does not identify the exact sensory mechanism behind this behaviour, but it shows that even a common freshwater predator can repeatedly relocate a known place in its natural environment. This suggests that fish movements may be more structured and place-based than we often assume. Understanding these routines can help us better appreciate how fish use habitats, how they organize their daily lives, and why particular places in a lake or reservoir may be important for them.
