What is it about?
Alcohol ethoxylate nonoionic surfactants were all shown to inhibit the growth of representative pathogenic bacteria. Some of the nonionic surfactants were shown to damage the cell membrane causing leakage of potassium ions and nucleotides.

Why is it important?
Cell membrane damage is implicated in the mechanism of disinfection by nonionic surfactants. This study provides further experimental evidence of cell membrane damage by nonionic surfactants.
Perspectives
This work is a good example of the power of collaboration of academia with industry. Martin Jones and myself both worked for a large multinational company at the time.
