What is it about?
This is a 2006 update to the inner workings of the Explicit Planetary Isentropic Coordinate (EPIC) atmospheric model, following the first exposition in 1998.

Why is it important?
The most important new feature is a vertical coordinate that adapts to mountain ranges, such that EPIC can now be applied to realistic studies of the atmospheres of Venus, Earth, and Mars, in addition to Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.
Perspectives
Halfway in time between the publication of this second EPIC model exposition and the first one, the University of Louisville played host to the Second Hybrid Isentropic Modeling Workshop, on April 18-20, 2002. I was honored to have among the visiting scientists one of my heroes, Prof. Akio Arakawa, from UCLA. The framework for the EPIC model is based on advanced finite-difference algorithms developed over many years by Arakawa and his co-workers.
