What is it about?

The morphology and chemical composition of several potential economic plants remain unkown. This paper presents novel descriptions regarding vegetative organs of three species of Stigmaphyllon; the diffuse underground systems of three species of Stigmaphyllon and chemical composition such as alkaloids, quinones, flavonoids and saponins.

Why is it important?

We described several meaningful characters that may aid further taxonomic and pharmacological studies of Stigmaphyllon. Thus, these species and others among the genus may be a target for future studies.

Perspectives

This is the first step towards the elucidation of morphology, development and chemical composition of the genus Stigmaphyllon (Malpighiaceae). In future, we hope to contribute with other species that remain unkown regarding their structure and composition.
