What is it about?
This paper plots all of South Africa's mining communities in one map and uses a set of measures to classify them as small mining towns, large mining towns, co-established cities and pre-existing communities. It also describes the history of mining communities by commodity in South Africa.

Why is it important?
It is the first time a comprehensive view of all mining communities in South Africa has been published. It provides a framework for classifying mining communities that could be used in other countries.
Perspectives
What strikes me the most is how many people live in communities affected by mining in South Africa. Mining still has huge influence, over 150 years after the first modern mining began.
