What is it about?

Private land is home to some amazing and important species and ecological communities. Protecting these natural values requires policy makers to engage private landholders, but success at engaging rural landholders in conservation initiatives has been mixed. So we looked at how conservation organisations currently frame their web messages to private landholders. We found a heavy reliance on environmentally-themed messages, which is unlikely to engage landholders who aren't necessarily motivated by these themes. We argue that perhaps framing the benefits of private land conservation more broadly than just environmental themes would engage a greater diversity of landholders.

Why is it important?

Private land is an important part of worldwide conservation efforts, especially because some amazing and important species and ecological communities are only found on private land. Understanding how to engage private landholders in conservation is an important part of protecting these species and communities.

Perspectives

As well as examining the current web communications of conservation organisations, this article explores how private land conservation messaging could be framed more strategically.
