What is it about?

The goal of this project was to understand how radioactive elements i.e. radiocaesium and radiostrontium, are taken up by agricultural crops after a radioactive fallout after a nuclear power plant accident or a nuclear bomb explosion. How the amount of uptake of the radionuclides are influenced by size and time of the fallout on the agricultural crops in relation to different plant growth stages.

Why is it important?

The two agricultural crops, spring oilseed rape and spring wheat, are important food crops and information today about the level of radioactive uptake by these two crops are verry limited. This study will add significant information that can be used for predicting the uptake and further transport of radionuclides in the food chain and finally to human food products.
