What is it about?

A new battery for energy storage at high temperatures. This new battery uses a soft electrolyte of mixed molten salts and oxide-ion conducting oxide powder to avoid flowing of the electrolyte which will allow the battery to better perform in mobile or portable devices (e.g. electric vehicles) and reduce evaporation and corrosion of the molten salt used. This new battery has comparable energy density with lithium ion batteries, but offers much higher power density, longer service life and lower environmental impact.

Perspectives

The research is still in the early stage, aiming at development of more flexible and powerful high temperature electrochemical energy storage technology.
