What is it about?
It is an in vitro mechanistic study revealing the protective effects of ω-3 fatty acids against saturated fatty acid-induced toxicity, in relevance to nephrotoxic effects as seen in obese individuals

Why is it important?
It is important because it provides an approach of understanding the involvement of endoplasmic reticulum stress pathway in the toxicity course of saturated fatty acids. This pathway is inhibited by unsaturated fatty acids (e.g. α-linolenic acid). The study may provide the basis for clinical approach using artificial ER stress inhibitors to fight against high fat-induced toxicity in a variety of disorders.
