What is it about?

Proper dimensioning of cogeneration (CHP) units may lead to scale economies and at the same time to a sufficient utilization factor of the recoverable heat, improving in this way the economy of these systems. This work presents a simple but quite accurate analytical method that leads directly to the optimum size of a CHP unit for domestic application, and to all this information required for its techno-economic evaluation.

Why is it important?

Dimensioning of CHP units is usually attempted through detailed programming of its hourly operation, according to the available load profiles. It is the first time that an analytical method is proposed to this aim, leading to the estimation of the optimum capacity of a CHP unit for residential application. In this way, programming, tiresome calculations and optimization techniques, which would be otherwise required, are finally avoided.

Perspectives

The proposed approach may act as a valuable tool for engineers and designers when considering the feasibility of applying cogeneration in a building. In this sense, it is expected to contribute to the rational dimensioning of CHP units in the residential sector.
