The paper reviews and provides evidence of the extent of poverty among rural populations in the low-elevation coastal zones of developing countries. The paper reviews evidence of how these poor populations cope with and are vulnerable to climate change, sea level rise and other coastal hazards.

Why is it important?
This is the first paper that quantifies the number of poor people living in rural low-elevation coastal zones globally, discusses their vulnerability to climate-induced coastal hazards, and identifies the countries with the most vulnerable populations.
Perspectives
I have been concerned with some time with the vulnerability of the rural poor in developing countries to climate change, and I have done considerable work on the impact of storms and other coastal hazards on vulnerable coastal communities.
