What is it about?

This is an evaluation of a financial aid program that began in 2008 and allocated funds using a lottery. It therefore lends itself to estimating the effect of financial aid, in this case on community college students.

Why is it important?

Community colleges educate a large proportion of students, but are relatively understudied. Even small amounts of cash can be helpful, as some students are living bill to bill and paycheck to paycheck while they attend school.

Perspectives

This paper had some surprising results, where some of the individuals selected to receive a benefit ended up worse off than the individuals who were not selected and never heard about it. We later discovered that a large proportion of the selected group were actually not eligible and never received benefits.
