What is it about?
We compared several mathematical methods for measuring the functional diversity of river insects in Ecuador’s Paute River Basin. Using advanced modelling and machine learning, we identified the index that best reflects changes in water quality and local environmental conditions. Our study recommends a practical approach for selecting the most informative functional diversity metric for stream monitoring.

Why is it important?
Selecting the right diversity index is crucial for reliable water quality assessment and management, especially in biodiverse and vulnerable tropical rivers. Our protocol helps scientists and water managers improve biomonitoring, making ecological evaluations more accurate and cost-effective.
Perspectives
This work brings together field ecology, data analysis, and practical conservation. I hope our approach will support more robust stream monitoring and inspire similar studies in other tropical regions.
