What is it about?

The aims of this research study were: (1) to rank the factors according to their influence on PAHs buildup; (2) to understand the linkage between external factors and inherent factors in relation to PAHs build-up; and (3) to demonstrate the practical application of the study outcomes in the development of a robust PAHs based stormwater treatment strategy and generation of priority area maps. The outcomes are expected to contribute to more effective PAHs targeted treatment system design.

Why is it important?

An in-depth understanding of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) build-up on urban roads is essential for effective stormwater treatment design. Past research studies have pointed out the relationship between influential factors and PAHs build-up individually. However, these studies do not provide a comprehensive analysis of the relationships and the hierarchy of factors in terms of their importance in influencing PAHs buildup. This paper presents the outcomes of an in-depth investigation into the range of influential factors, including traffic volume, land use, distance to highway and roughness of road surfaces by ranking them in terms of their influence on PAHs build-up.

Perspectives

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) build-up on urban road surfaces has an adverse impact on urban water environments. The primary reason is that pollutants deposited on road surfaces can be detached by stormwater runoff, which transports them into receiving waters. This will lead to water quality degradation. Due to their toxicity, an in-depth understanding of PAHs build-up characteristics is required for effective stormwater treatment design.
