What is it about?

Substance use and condomless sex are both well-studied behaviors in sexual minority men, but few studies have used event-level data collection to examine their relationships. The study describes how condomless sex and sex while drunk or high co-occur, in a diverse sample of young men who have sex with men in NYC.

Why is it important?

Our findings show that the type of drug used is less important to condomless sex than the act of having sex while intoxicated, which increases likelihood of condomless anal sex by 4–5 times. This is important to understanding the relationship between substance use and sexual behaviors, and suggests a need for addressing substance use in HIV/STI prevention.
