What is it about?

PCNA is a key protein required for many aspects of DNA metabolism, includingDNA replication and repair. It acts as a molecular tool belt for the recruitment of many different proteins. Interactions with these proteins need to be tightly regulated. PCNA can be modified by two small proteins: ubiquitin and SUMO. The different modifications alter the nature of the protein-protein interactions in veiling PCNA. This paper summarises a paper from the Ulrich lab on the role of sumoylation of S. cerevisiae PCNA

Perspectives

To date S. cerevisiae and human PCNA proteins are known to be modified by SUMO. However, whilePCNA and SUMO are highly conserved proteins, little is known about whether the roles of sumoylation of PCNA are conserved between species. It will be very interesting to know whether PCNA is also sumoylated in another model organism (S. pomp) and whether the role of the modication is the same as in S. cerevisiae.
