Income inequality and the imprint of globalization on U.S. metropolitan areas

What is it about?

Globalization has many avenues of impact on society. One of these is its imprint on large metropolitan areas, especially global cities. In the case of economic inequality, this research article traces the pattern of such impact across a variety of factors endogenous to the urban setting. It starts by identifying elements defining global city status in the U.S., and then provides a quantitative path analysis showing the influences of globalization coursing through this type of metropolitan area in determining economic inequality.

Why is it important?

Economic inequality in urban areas is a leading attribute of socio-political polarization in most countries, but especially in western civilization. This research unvails some of the underlying influences causing such polarization. It begs the question of what should be done regarding institutional and governmental policies regarding how to mitigate both social unrest and the betterment of life for all families.
