What is it about?

Do men and women have the same motivations when they choose which profile photo to upload to Facebook? We guessed that women would try to appear as nice, family people while men would try to appear as tough or rich. We analyzed 500 Facebook pages and found that women uploaded more family photos. Men uploaded photos of them in the rugged outdoors, wearing sunglasses, not smiling. In other cases they wore more formal clothes than women, perhaps trying to tell us they're rich.

Why is it important?

Since our Facebook users were from all over the world, it seems that the gender differences that we found didn't result from specific cultural norms. Instead, they suggest that some gender differences are in our nature.
