Why is it important?

Because of their biocompatibility and excellent bioactivity, Bioactive glasses are specifically beneficial for replacement and repair of damaged and diseased bone in tissues engineering. The bioactive glasses have gained consideration for bone tissue applications (such as spinal surgery, orthopedics, dental and other applications) due to their superior benefits, such as osteoconductivity and osteoinductivity with respect to conventional bioceramics

Perspectives

The aim of this paper is to study the synergistic effect of Ag2O and CaO on biocompatibility, bioactivity, cell viability and alkaline phosphatase of synthesized 58S bioactive glass via sol gel method. The effects of Ag2O addition on bioactive glass was investigated in the simulated body fluid (SBF). Hydroxyapatite formation and the rate of ions substitution between SBF and BG was evaluated by XRD, FTIR, SEM, pH and ICP analysis.
