What is it about?

The bacteria in the gut (that we all have) were examined for populations who migrated from Asia to the USA. The length of time from leaving Asia to arriving in the USA showed that the gut bacteria quickly came to resemble gut bacteria of USA long-term residents. The USA gut bacteria are associated with obesity and chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. The children of these migrants were also at risk. The change was very rapid....just 9 months.

Why is it important?

The gut bacteria are important to our long term health. Eat more fibre.

Perspectives

This is an important publication because it shows the power of community based research efforts. SoLaHmo and CBPAR were powerful supporters of this study. Migration is rising worldwide and this study with very high powered modern science techniques demonstrates two main points. Firstly migrant populations are vulnerable and health messaging to maintain fibre and hold onto their traditional food practices will keep them healthy. It is also a lesson for USA residents - which should encourage the intake of more fibre. The gut bacteria are flexible, malleable, and can be changed for healthier outcomes for the USA population.
