We not only reviewed the evidence about the genetic component in periodontitis pathogenesis, but we introduced a model about the complex interactions of various risk factors for periodontitis.

Why is it important?

Modelling complexity is a significant step in personalized periodontology. The anatomy of the tissues of periodontium together with the intepretation of genetic studies on periodontitis, give us the opportunity to make hypotheses about the existence of a mixture of deterministic and stochasticity rules in the pathogenesis of periodontitis.

Perspectives

The quest to learn more about how a genetic variation contributes to periodontitis pathogenesis, cannot be irrelevant to how all parts of a complex environment are interconnected. Then all genetic information coming in can be analysed through a complexity model to better understand how periodontitis initiates and progresses.
