What is it about?

In this work we studied graphene covered gold nanostructures by scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS). We have shown that annealing can induce the formation of strained graphene-gold hybrids, where the lattice parameters of both graphene and gold are altered.

Why is it important?

The modified lattice parameters reduce the misfit between graphene and gold, giving rise to moiré patterns with anomalously large periods. These moiré superlattices modify the graphene density of states and induce charge localization at nanoscale even at room temperature.

Perspectives

This observation can be useful in the interpretation of STM images measured on other graphene/metallic systems as well.
