What is it about?

The system Nb - Ni - Si is fundamental for the understanding of many tecnological materials, and, in spite of this, is poorly known. Experimental results are limited to one single isothermal section of the phase diagram obtained by a Russian group. The present work advances knowledge by suggesting a thermodynamic model based on ab initio calculations.

Why is it important?

Knowledge of phase equilibria is fundamental, for example, to understand, for example, heat treatments. Most alloys are very complex, including many alloying elements. This kind of work helps building the knowledge on the thermodynamics of these alloys n a step-by-step basis.
