What is it about?

Lethal area 50 percent (LA50) and standardized mortality ratio (SMR) are two main indices which can be used to gain some idea about the performance of a burn department. We have calculated these two measures for Mashhad Burn Center in a five year period.

Why is it important?

Due to a high discrepancy in the epidemiology of burn injury around the world, it is difficult to find a unique measure to rank and compare burn units.

Perspectives

If all major burn departments around the world perform this self-evaluation via calculating SMR and LA50, not only a global comparison will be available but also a continuous quality improvement in patient management is promising.
