Why is it important?

The high prevalence of anemia and iron deficiency are still a public health problem across the world in both rich and poor countries. An understanding of the risk factors associated with donor deferral for "anemia test" and iron deficiency can help to improve recruitment of donors, optimize blood collection and increase the offer of products to save lives without damaging other lives.

Perspectives

We were able to find some unusual risk factors related to donor deferral due to anemia and iron deficiency. Our study can help blood banks to design algorithms and improve donor notification and referral. Additionaly, by doing that blood banks can improve their relationship with their donors and increase the recognition of their service in the community, for the public service they are providing.
