The Process
Wet, undisrupted microalgae paste mixed with methanol, immobilized lipase and TSS. The TSS was maintained hydrophilic at low temperature to disrupt the cells and liberate the oils. The TSS was switched to hydrophobic state by increasing the temperature to to dissolve the liberated oils and simultaneously convert them to biodiesel. Finally, the TSS was switched back to the hydrophilic state by reducing the temperature back to separate the biodiesel.
