First description of the peculiar phenotypic and functional characteristics of circulating fibrocytes in comparison with circulating myeloid dendritic cells and monocytes in asthma. Relevance to asthma exacerbations triggered by rhinovirus infections in allergic asthmatics because fibrocytes recruited from the peripheral blood amplify allergen-induced inflammatory responses and promote further inflammation by functioning as a reservoir for rhinovirus replication in the bronchial mucosa of these patients.
